Hi creative friends,
Are you new to the wonderful world of paper crafting? Welcome!
This creative hobby is perfect for expressing your artistic side and making beautiful, handmade projects.
From greeting cards to scrapbooks, journals to decorative items, the possibilities are endless.
But first…. let’s talk about the basic tools you’ll need to get started.
I’ve put together this easy-to-follow guide to help you build your paper crafting toolkit.
These essentials are affordable, versatile, and readily available, so you can start crafting with confidence.
I’ve included links to some of my favorite beginner tools in my Amazon store to help you get started.

Essential Tools for Beginners
1. Scissors
A good pair of scissors is a must-have for any paper crafter. Look for:
- Precision scissors for intricate cutting. These are my absolute favourites!
- All-purpose scissors for general use.
Having both types ensures you can handle delicate designs as well as larger cuts with ease.
Tip: You may find my YouTube video on ‘How to Fussy-Cut’ helpful.
2. Craft Knife and Cutting Mat
For precise cuts, especially on thicker materials, a craft knife is invaluable.
I use both a retractable scalpel knife for intricate cutting and a general craft cutter.
Tip: look for one with a cushion grip for comfort when cutting.
Pair it with a self-healing cutting mat to protect your surfaces and achieve clean lines.
Choose a cutting mat with grid lines to help with measurements.
3. Adhesives
Every project needs the right glue or tape to hold it together. Here are a few essentials:
- Glue stick for lightweight paper.
- Double-sided tape for clean, no-mess adhesion. Comes in 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm and 15 mm widths.
- Liquid glue for more detailed work or heavier embellishments. I use both white PVA glue and clear glue. This is another popular glue amongst paper crafters.
- Foam adhesive squares to add dimension to your projects… or double sided foam tape .
I shared my opinion on glues a while back, based on my 40 years working in the professional art industry… and it is a little controversial, but true!!
4. Ruler
A sturdy ruler is essential for straight lines and accurate measurements.
A metal ruler is especially handy when used with a craft knife, as it won’t get damaged during cutting.
Tip: Having worked in professional art studios, we never used plastic rulers with craft knives. It’s too easy for the knife to kick up over the plastic ruler and cut the fingers holding the ruler.
5. Paper Trimmer
A paper trimmer is a game-changer for achieving perfectly straight cuts quickly and easily.
Many trimmers come with both cutting and scoring blades, making them versatile tools.
6. Bone Folder and Score Board
For clean, crisp folds in your paper, a bone folder is indispensable.
Pair it with a score board to create perfect folds and creases, especially for cards, envelopes, and boxes.
Together, they ensure neat, professional results in your projects.
7. Punches
Punches are essential for adding shapes and decorative edges to your projects. Start with:
- Corner punch for rounded edges and a polished look.
- Basic circle punches in various sizes for versatile crafting.
8. Embellishments
While not essential, a small selection of embellishments can add flair to your projects. Start with:
- Washi tape
- Rhinestones or pearls
- Buttons, lace and ribbons… check out charity shops and estate sales for vintage finds.
- Sequins and glitters like Stickles and Glossy Accents.
9. Quality Paper
Invest in a variety of papers to experiment with different textures and weights. Some great options for beginners include:
- Cardstock (a heavier paper, perfect for card bases and sturdy projects).
- Patterned paper (adds visual interest without much effort).
- Coated matte photo paper for printing digital designs. This is the only paper I use for printing my digital kits, as it provides vibrant colors and a professional finish. Brands will vary depending on which country you live in.
As a graphic designer, I also recommend exploring digital kits. These kits are an excellent way to access coordinated designs and elements that you can print and use in your projects. They’re perfect for adding a unique touch to your crafts.
10. Storage Solutions
Keeping your tools and supplies organized makes crafting more enjoyable.
Start with simple containers or baskets to sort your materials, and expand as your collection grows.
A Few Final Tips
- Start small: You don’t need to buy everything at once. Begin with the basics and add tools as you discover your crafting style.
- Look for multi-purpose tools: Items like paper trimmers and bone folders can serve multiple functions, saving you money and space.
- Have fun: The most important thing about paper crafting is to enjoy the process. Experiment, make mistakes, and create something uniquely yours!
