Hi creative friends,
Welcome back to our Craft Room Crafter of the Month!
This series is our monthly rendezvous with the creative minds that make our crafting community feel like home.
It’s the chance to draw inspiration from their artistry, take a peek behind the curtain of their creativity, and connect with the incredible members who bring life to our virtual crafting haven.
Crafter of the Month
Every month, I sit down with a standout member from the Craft Room to chat about all things crafty, from what they like to make to what inspires them.
This month, I am thrilled to introduce you to Dianne Johnson from the UK, a remarkable crafter who joined our design team in August.
Dianne’s artistic flair and dedication to her craft have not only caught my attention but has also become a source of inspiration for many within the community.
Getting to Know Dianne Johnson
Dianne has been an integral part of our Craft Room family for several months now, and her journey as a crafter is both fascinating and inspiring.
I had the privilege of sitting down with her to dive into the world of her creativity.
Name & where do you live (state/country)?
My name is Dianne Johnson and I live on the South East coast of the UK in a city called Brighton. I was born here and have lived here for my entire life.
What initially inspired you to start crafting, and how did you discover your passion for it?
My father was an artist and also loved painting and decorating the family home. He sold a lot of his paintings and also did commissions. My mother loved to knit and crochet. Both of my parents were gifted and I was always amazed as a child at what they created between them. I think this is what initially inspired my crafting passion.
How would you describe your craft style?
I like mixed media, I like to use different elements in my crafts. When I begin to create something I usually don’t have a plan in mind. I just follow my creative instinct and go with the flow.
Can you share a memorable crafting project that holds a special place in your heart and why it’s meaningful to you?
I recently altered a jewellery box that was gifted to me by my late sister. Knowing me as well as she did, when giving it to me she said: “I’m sure you will make it special”. I hope that I did her proud.
In a world full of crafting possibilities, what specific craft or technique do you find most enjoyable and why?
I love the paper crafts the most. There are so many things that you can create using paper. I like to recover boxes and objects and also make journals, Cards and various other beautiful things. The digital images that Kerryanne English creates make paper crafting very special for me and I love to use them for my projects.
How has being a member of the Craft Room community at Shabby Art Boutique influenced your creative journey?
Being a member of The Craft Room has upped my game. I have been so inspired by the other member’s creations and in awe of the talent there. The members always encourage each other’s creative flair. I was thrilled to become a member of the Design Team and I hope that my creations help to inspire others.
Are there any particular artists or crafters who have significantly influenced your style and approach to crafting?
There are a few artists who inspire me but the two crafters that have inspired me the most are Lauren Hord and Nicola Mason. Both have unique styles and both are so very talented. I love to see their creations and I am in awe of their talents.
Can you share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into your creative process? What does a typical crafting session look like for you?
I like to print out and look at all the papers that I’ve chosen to work with. Usually, there will be one or two designs that catch my eye and instinctively I form a plan for a project from these images. I’m quite a neat crafter and like to be organised so I then collect everything that I will need for that particular project. I can’t focus if my desk is messy so organisation is the key for me.
What are your ‘can’t live without’ craft essentials?
A good quality matt photo paper, my printer, Collall glue, Sharp scissors and a good scoreboard. I use all of these things in almost everything that I create.
What are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m not working on anything as it’s the Christmas holiday but, I have made a lot of different things for our family Christmas including Christmas crackers which actually snapped when we pulled them, much to my delight! I also printed out and stuffed the Christmas elves to hang on our grandchildren’s Christmas trees which they adored as much as I do. We have been spoiled with Kerryanne’s digitals this year and I have loved working with every digital kit that she has produced. I am excited to see what the new year holds and I look forward to crafting with the lovely members of The Craft Room.
