Now that my studio space is completely packed up and vacated, I’ve turned my attention to the new studio I am about to build at our new house. Aahhhh… the possibilities!!! There are so many things I could do that I’ve been left in breathless anticipation…. not to mention the sleepless nights. Of course you’d think I’d have soooooo many other more important things to be laying awake at night thinking about when we are about to undertake a huge move, but a new workspace is important to me.
They do feature the most incredible studios and work spaces of some very talented artisans and even though it works out quite expensive to purchase the mag here in Australia, I’m never disappointed with the magazine.
For me a workspace must look inviting and inspiring but above all it must function well. I don’t think it matters particularly how big your workspace is, as long as it is laid out well and everything you need is easily accessible, then it works.
Sometimes I look at the pictures in the mag and wonder what we would think if they showed these same work spaces as they really are… come on, you don’t truly believe that artists are incredibly tidy people do you? Most of these rooms (like say 99.9%) look unused and of course if you were the featured artist, you’d do a big clean up before the photographer arrived too – right?
I remember once I was particularly taken with one of the artists work and followed a link to her website and from there to her blog. Reading through her blog archives I reached the post where she talked about the magazine featuring her studio…. I should have stopped there while I was still intrigued. In this post she talked about only having a week to transform her quite boring and uninteresting studio into this amazing and artistic show piece for the magazine. Okay, right there…. illusion shattered!!!
So that brings me right back to my own studio. What will I do? What colour scheme and layout will I use? Will I have a separate classroom or incorporate it in my own work space? Hmmmm… so many choices and decisions to be made. Guess I’ll just keep on reading the magazine, dreaming and planning.
Until next time…

dear kerryanne…. i guess the illusion created by mags is what makes them sell..
in the “HOME” mags..there is always the strategically placed wine bottle/fruit bowl etc etc.
OH WELL!! i guess the BASICS are there..& if we can look at them and dream…& get some inspiration..& BUY the mag..their job is done!!
CANNOT wait to see what you come up with..I bet it will be awesome…& HOW exciting a project..!! (nearly finished re organising my room!!)..

Hey Kerryanne! Well, of COURSE you’re planning the stufio first – priorities are important! :0) You know, I’ve always been a bit sceptical about those photos of ‘perfect’ studios in mags – sure, they look great, but I want to see them in ACTION!! Personally, I think a bit of creative clutter gives a studio/sewing room its character … and BOY does my sewing room have LOADS of character! Tee! Hee! Hee! Just think how much fun you’ll have adding all those aspects to your new studio that you always wished for in your previous one – can’t wait to see the results! Bear Hugs! KRIS

Hi Kerryanne, yes big decisions to be made! I have thought about it long and hard but first and foremost it must be functional. I want my space to be contained! I don’t want to have to drag things out to the rest of the house if you know what I mean. At the moment, I have stuff everywhere because it just won’t fit into my space at the moment. So, I am so excited by the prospect of having my own room in a few weeks time. Lots to think about! I hope you are not too stressed out with your move? Thinking of you, Kathryn.

Thank you so very much for your kind words about WHERE WOMEN CREATE. Every time I see our magazine on someone’s blog it literally takes my breath away. I love this job! Photographing and working with this many fabulous women is truly a 30 year dream come true.
When your new studio is finished make certain that you send us pictures. Maybe we can feature it on the pages of our magazine.
I wish you much happiness and success with all of your creative endeavors.
My best
