Shabby Chic… get the look!

One of the questions I frequently get asked is…

“Where do you find all of your shabby chic pieces?”

And the honest answer is, I make quite a lot of it myself.

 

I like clocks… a lot.

You have probably already figured that out because they feature in my images so often.

I love how they can add a pop of colour to a vignette, so I have them in many different colours.

This aqua one is new.

It started life as a vintage look metal clock.

I actually have several of these and while I think they are perfectly fine as a vintage neutral, they were a bit ‘blah’ in amongst my cottage pastel décor in the kitchen.

So… the perfect solution was to give it a mini make-over with a couple of coats of paint.

First I dismantled the clock and gave it a good clean to remove any built up dust or debris.

For this soft aqua, I mixed together Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence and Old White.

I painted the clock with two smooth, even coats of this paint mix and when it was thoroughly dry, I sanded softly with a fine sanding block.

Personally, I didn’t want a boldly distressed look. I prefer the soft age worn look achieved with light sanding in parts that would naturally wear first.

Tip: when I mix my own colours, I put any leftovers in a sample bottle and label with the paint mix and ratio. This is perfect for any touch ups later on.

I pick up my bottles from a paint supply company, but I have seen them in discount stores too.

I think you’ll agree… this aqua clock fits perfectly now with my shabby chic look.

Paint is an easy and inexpensive technique that you can use to update many vintage and thrifted finds, so don’t be put off if an item you find doesn’t immediately shout shabby chic.

These beautiful pink camellia’s are the first of my new season autumn blooms. Soon our whole yard will be filled with white and pink camellias and with some of our bushes reaching more than 4 metres tall, they will be putting on quite a show.
