I’m all about keeping things as natural as possible in my home.
This stems originally from raising a child with severe allergies to chemicals.
It was a necessity in our home… but I’m sure now that we are all the better for it.
Today I am sharing my top 5 DIY projects to scent your home naturally.
1. Scented Room Spray
There’s nothing more welcoming than the subtle floral tones of a scented room.
So I like to freshen the smell of my house with a scented room spray.
I share my recipe and free printable label here.
2. Homemade Candles
Candles are easy and inexpensive to make and I like that I can scent them with essential oils and choose pretty candle holders, such as this gorgeous teacup.
There are many easy candle making tutorials online, but I keep it pretty simple.
I melt paraffin wax in a double boiler, then scent with my favourite essential oils. I secure a wick in the centre of my mold, before pouring in my melted wax.
3 Sleep Pillows
I tuck my sleep pillow under my pillow or in my pillowcase each night. . . the occasional tossing and movement of my head releases the scent. Sometimes I just sit it on the arm of my chair where I sit each evening, so I can inhale those sleep inducing scents prior to bedtime.
The main ingredient I use in my sleep pillows is Australian gown hops which is a natural sedative that helps induce sleep. Mixed with relaxing lavender and chamomile flowers, this herbal mixture is a great natural aid for anyone having trouble sleeping.
There are many varied recipes… this is my version:
Half hops and a quarter each of lavender and chamomile flowers.
Note: Hops has a very distinct smell. If you find it too strong, try equal quantities of each ingredient.
4. Dried Lavender
Lavender has many uses around the home and I use it as both an essential oil and in the dried form.
I always have a supply of dried lavender that I purchase from Lavender farms. I keep it in a sealed plastic bag, inside a big plastic tub until I need it.
It’s lovely in an open container to simply scent a room.
I keep it in calico bags that I hang inside my wardrobe or store it in drawers to keep moths and insects at bay, as well as leaving a lovely scent.
Lavender balls are another fun way to display dried lavender, while enjoying its lovely scent. I share how I made these lavender balls here.
5. DIY Scented Reed Diffusers
I’ve been making my own reed diffusers for awhile now and have found that my version lasts a lot longer than those I purchased pre-made.
I also like that I can make up my own scents using a variety of essential oils.
See my recipe and project steps for making your own reed diffuser here.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful ways to make a home smell beautiful without resorting to nasty chemicals.
I remember seeing your pretty candles in the past – they look adorable in the tea-cups.

I just adore being embraced by different healing scents during the day, Kerryanne. Which is one of the reasons I recently became an Independent Distributor for Young Living Essential Oils recently. So clean. So natural. Patchouli is one of my favorites right now. 🙂 I’m learning to use them in healing and comforting ways…which in turn makes life sweeter and more meaningful, I think. Thank you for sharing that beautiful room spray label. I just love it! And that candle in a teacup is just so darling!
