I’ve totally embraced this soft blue-y/mauve colour palette for fall.
It just so seamlessly blends in with my shabby, cottage decor and is an easy transition from summer pastels.
Today I decided to make something practical and pretty…. new fabric fall coasters and they couldn’t be easier!!

This is a perfect beginners project for those new to sewing or an easy to whip up one for seasoned sewers. These 6 fabric fall coasters took me less than 2 hours to make from start to finish.
How to make fabric fall coasters
Materials:
-
A variety of cotton fabrics for top and bottom of coasters. Make sure fabric has been washed and pressed before using.
-
Wool felt or quilt batting
-
Normal sewing supplies.
Instructions:
1. Make a leaf template or use the one I’ve supplied below. My leaf is 13 cm x 13 cm.
To download this template, simply right click to enlarge and save to your own computer.
2. Cut two squares of fabric and one square of felt/quilt batting for each leaf. I cut mine 13 cm x 13 cm and sandwiched the felt between the two fabrics. Remember to have the right side of fabric facing out.
3. Trace around your template, directly onto the fabric. I lightly pencilled in the veins of the leaf as a guide, but no two leaves are the same. Pin your three layers together ready for sewing.
4. I used a darker thread and a free-motion embroidery stitch to sew around the outline and the leaf veins twice. Part of the charm of this sewing style is the relaxed look.
5. Once you’ve embroidered all of your leaves, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut them out, allowing 2 – 3 mm raw edge.
Tip: Once you have washed your coasters a few times the edges will have that shabby raw edge look that is so perfect for a shabby, cottage home.
How sweet do these pretty fabric leaf coasters look for fall?
I’ve used coordinating Tilda fabrics, but you could use any fabric, making this a fun project for neutrals, pastels or brights.

Really love these. Being a canadian, I am so used to seeing maple leaves in Reds and oranges. However, I love these! Definitely on my to do list.
(Take another peek at your first photo … Particularly the white maple leaf.)
