Do you love the gentle and calming scent of lavender?
With its multitude of uses, there’s no wonder that this 2000 year old herb is still a popular favorite for scenting homes.
I’ve used lavender in many ways over the years, but this is the first time I’ve made lavender balls… and they couldn’t be easier.
With house guests due in just a few days, I decided to spruce up the bathroom with a little something extra.
These lavender balls provide a lovely scent, while being visually interesting at the same time.
I used dried lavender that I already had, but it is easy to dry your own if you grow lavender.
To dry the lavender, you will need to harvest the lavender prior to the flower buds fully opening. Simply cut the stems, leaving them long and tie them up in small bundles.
I hang them upside down in my laundry cupboard which is both dark and ventilated. When the lavender is completely dried, strip the buds from the stalk using your fingers. Store lavender buds in a container away from moisture and light. Stir every now and then to separate the buds.
When completely dried, you can use your lavender for many wonderful scented crafts.
How to make lavender balls
You will need:
Polystyrene balls (any size),
Lavender coloured paint,
Painting supplies – palette, paint brush, water etc.
Mod Podge,
Dried lavender buds.
Instructions
1. I started by painting the styrene balls with the lavender coloured acrylic paint.
2. When dry, poke a bamboo skewer into your ball and paint with Mod Podge.
3. Then place your ball into the bowl of lavender buds and press the buds firmly into the glue.
4. Leave to dry.
I think the balls look interesting and are a fun way to add that lovely lavender scent to any room. I just need to find the right container to put mine in now.
I may even thread them on a cotton line and hang them up… what do you think?
I’ll be sharing my handmade lavender balls with these friends this week:

These are fabulous. I love lavender in any way, shape or form and will definitely make some of these. Might you also know how to make lavender wands?
Kerryanne says
Nancy, I used to make lavender wands years ago to use in my drawers. Haven’t made them for ages, but they are quite easy. When I get a new crop of lavender I’ll do a post on them 🙂

Oooo, I think they would look super strung together.
What an unusual way of using Lavender.

These are amazing! I’m so happy you posted on this because my sister gave me a huge bag of lavender from a villa here in Italy and I had NO clue what to do with it (minus shoving it in my undie drawer!)! Now to track down those styrofoam balls (that’s what we call them in the states).
Kerryanne says
Lavender can be used for lots of home crafts Madaline. How lucky you are to have a huge bag… have fun making nice smelling things.

I’m making some right now and the did not totally cover up the ball. I tried brushing on the glue and it did not work very well for me. Then I rolled them in the glue. Yours looks like they are covered really good. What am I missing?
thank you
Kerryanne says
Sounds like you may not have had either enough glue or strong enough glue 🙂
