Once upon a time…. back in the last century (which makes me sound painfully old), as a young woman with my heart all aflutter, I eagerly awaited Valentine’s Day and the promise of flowers or jewellery and definitely a romantic dinner.
But as the years march on my love and I, now nearing our 28th wedding anniversary, don’t really go all out for Valentine’s Day. I’m sure that like most middle aged couples we express our love in the little things we do and say every day and prefer to celebrate our anniversary instead of Valentine’s Day.
But…. I still love the idea of celebrating LOVE and romance, so a fun way to do that is to incorporate some love inspired décor for a few weeks prior to February 14th each year. By simply switching out some of my normal décor for Valentine themed pretties, extra candles and flowers, it infuses our home with a lovely touch of romance.
Today I’m joining Jennifer of Town and Country Living for her Heartfelt and Handmade Blog Hop and I’m sharing a sweet vintage LOVE banner project I made this week.
I like using banners because they are an easy way to add texture and interest to your décor and they can be easily changed to suit the season or celebration.
When I was designing this banner I wanted to make something that was soft with a pastel palette… also including a little shabbiness and a touch of vintage too.
By using the word ‘LOVE’ instead of Valentine, I can re-use it any time of the year.
I used a variety of pretty papers to make this banner… some were digital background papers and the others were ones I designed for this project. I’ll be sharing the vintage LOVE medallions I made as a free printable for you further down in my post.

How to Make a Vintage LOVE Banner
Materials
Chipboard banner x 6,
Printed background papers,
Printed LOVE Medallions – DOWNLOAD HERE,
Paper glue like Mod Podge, white glue etc,
Paper cutter/craft knife and metal ruler,
Seam binding ribbon in pink,
Optional – sewing machine.
Instructions
- Print LOVE medallions on matt photo paper or normal copy paper.
- Paint around edges and back side of banner pennants using white acrylic paint.
- One of the best ways to add texture to a banner is by making concertina fan-wheels. I used some pink music paper to make 6 of them.
- I dipped the edges of the fan-wheels in white glue and then glass glitter… just for a little sparkle!
- Cut out a variety of background papers and adhere to front side of banner pennants using white glue. Sand off excess paper over hang and remove all dust particles.
- I chose to add another smaller insert layer on my banner using a coordinating paper.
7. Assemble your banner pennants by layering papers and elements. As you can see, I added small paper doilies and a hand-cut floral scallops to mine. I also decided to sew a stitch line around some of my papers. Some of the paper edges were given an aged look with brown chalk.
8. When you have all your elements in place, adhere your vintage medallion to the top of the fan-wheel.
9. The banners have per-cut holes in them, so you will need to push something like a bamboo skewer through the paper to re-set the holes. Thread the banner onto ribbon or seam binding and then it is ready to hang!
There is no right or wrong way to make this banner. One of my favourite things about creating with paper crafts is simply sitting amongst my supplies picking bits and pieces to add to my project.

It would definitely be pretty for a little girl’s room or nursery Toni. If the medallions were only put on with double sided tape, they could be removed and replaced with different ones throughout the year. xx

Will be so fun putting this banner together. Think will be making one for each of our grand daughters as they are so special to us. We don’t get to see older grand daughter often since she’s at college in Northern CA. The younger grand daughter will be going to college in late August, why do they have to grow up so fast? As it is she’s so busy with her senior year in high school she doesn’t have much time.
Silly to bemoan them growing up, just feeling bereft at not seeing either one. Thank heaven for the computer and Skype. They are such wonderful young women, we feel so fortunate they are our grand daughters.
