Thank you for the lovely response to last weeks DIY project, the village shops.
I’m thrilled that so many of you have chosen to make them and please know, I’m always here to answer any questions or painting technique queries by email.
Last week I gave the instructions for making part 1 – the quilt shop.
Today in part 2 you’ll find the instructions for the antique shop and a pink terrace house.
All the materials and techniques used are given on part 1 – HERE
Antique Shop Painting Instructions
Ensure all edges of timber have been sanded smooth.
Basecoat: all sides and base of block using Soft Sage; roof using Light Avocado.
Transfer the pattern lightly using the pattern tracing, graphite paper and stylus. Only sketch in the basic shapes – all detail will be added freehand.
Block in as follows: font and back door using French Mauve; windows using Light Mocha; large tree using Light Avocado; smaller tree using Light Avocado and Soft Sage 1:1; plant pot and tree trunk using Mink Tan; trunks of climbing rose using watery Burnt Umber; Antique sign using Warm White.
Shade around internal edges of windows using Burnt Umber. Curtains are added to the windows at front and rear using watery Warm White.
Shade below windows and the antique sign using a side-load of Burnt Umber.
Shade the doors using Mauve. Highlight panels on front door using Pink Chiffon and also add a door handle with a dot of Pink Chiffon. The window in the door and the handle of the back door are Pink chiffon too.
Trees – paint small eight point stars on the larger tree using French Mauve. The smaller tree has swirls of Warm White. Add wispy grass at base of trees using watery Light Avocado. The foliage and roses are added to the climbing rose using the same technique used for the Quilt Shop. While adding foliage to the vine, also add some to the pot at the front door. This plant has dots of Pink Chiffon and Warm White.
The black pen is used for a lot of the detail on this shop: all scroll detail on doors, windows and sign and the bird cage at front door.
Pattern
Right click pattern and save to your own computer. Open graphic in a word program and resize to fit your wood cut-out.
Finishing
If you’d like a distressed look, sand edges of shop using sandpaper before varnishing with several coats of spray varnish.
I attached a twisted wire heart to the roof in place of a chimney.
Pink Terrace House Painting Instructions
Ensure all edges of timber have been sanded smooth.
Basecoat: all sides and base of block using Pink Chiffon; roof using Soft Sage.
Transfer the pattern lightly using the pattern tracing, graphite paper and stylus. Only sketch in the basic shapes – all detail will be added freehand.
Shade around the edges of the house walls using Sable Brown. The roof has random dots of Warm White added with the stylus.
Add tiny brick details randomly around house using Warm White and a 1/8” flat brush.
Block in as follows: doors using French Mauve; windows and windows in doors using Warm White; plant post using Mink Tan; plant trunks using Sable Brown.
Shade and outline doors using Mauve. Add the lattice detail to doors and windows using Mauve. Add highlights to lattice using Pink Chiffon.
Shade plant pots with Sable Brown. Add all foliage using the same technique used for the previous shops. The standard trees have dot flowers using the stylus and warm white for petals and French Mauve for flower centers. Pots at front and rear of house have dot flowers of Warm White and Pink Chiffon. Below the standards there are lavender plants – paint foliage using watery strokes of Light Avocado and Soft Sage. The flower spikes are single strokes of Deep Periwinkle and Wisteria.
Pattern
Right click pattern and save to your own computer. Open graphic in a word program and resize to fit your wood cut-out.
Finishing
If you’d like a distressed look, sand edges of house using sandpaper before varnishing with several coats of spray varnish.
To add more visual interest, I attached a twist of silver wire around the house and added a padlocked charm. A small key would also look great.
This is definitely a project you can make your own… different colour palette, all kinds of shops eg bakery, book shop, church etc.
The possibilities are endless!!
Happy crafting
