I’m a fabric napkin kind of girl…
And in the absence of a napkin, a paper serviette will do just fine…
But I do like to have a napkin or serviette when I eat.
So with Christmas fast approaching, I spent some time today working on a couple of projects for our Christmas day table.
This year I’ve gone for a ‘homespun’ theme, which is in keeping with our casual approach to Christmas that we’ve decided to adopt this year.
For the first time ever, we’ve moved away from the traditional meal and more formal approach, so it seems only fitting that our décor reflects that style.
I still insist on napkins though… so I set about making some fun personalized napkins.
I made these using unbleached calico/muslin… and it doesn’t get much cheaper than that.
I always wash calico a few time before I use it, to remove all the sizing and to shrink and soften it.
I used one of my linen napkins to get the size I like and simply cut out and edged all four sides on each napkin.
Out came my trusty alphabet stamps and a red ink pad.
When using stamps on fabric I prefer the Versacraft pads by Tsukineko. They are easy to set with an iron and wash really well. However, on this occasion I used my StazOn pad because I have a really nice red ink pad from that range.
While StazOn is a permanent ink pad, it is not recommended for fabric because it can eventually destroy the fabric, but for one off projects or ones you know you won’t need to wash too often, I think it works fine.
To keep the stamping in a line, I placed a piece of sticky tape along the napkin edge and kept the letters above the tape. Stamped letters look better when they are less uniform, so don’t worry if you words aren’t perfect.
I made a few variations… our names on each corner… and this cheeky little ‘eat, drink and be merry’ one.
This project could just as easily be made with paper serviettes.
Tomorrow I will share with you the rest of the table décor and another ‘homespun’ project…
But for now I will leave you with this…
My toy poodle Milly, was constantly under my feet today while shooting these photos, so I made her my trusty assistant. She got to hold the lights (don’t worry, these ones don’t get hot). Unperturbed, she just kept her stance and watched what was going on with great interest. She’s finally becoming a good studio buddy!!
Festive hugs,
♥
