You know that I love making a handmade home.
Not only is it fun to make your own products, but it is also reassuring these days to know exactly what ingredients have been used.
Sooo…. following on from my tips for ‘self care’ that I shared last week, I thought today I’d share a recipe for the scented shower steamers I use when I need a little pampering.
I’m sure you’ve probably seen many different recipes for shower discs, vaporisers, steamers etc on Pinterest. I know I have, but they are all slightly different.
This is such an easy recipe and takes very little time. I like to speed mine up by baking in the oven (that’s usually because I want to use them straight away), but if you have planned ahead, you can dry these naturally over a few days.

Ingredients:
I’ve tried several recipes… some with just Bi-Carb Soda and water, but I like this one the best.
For the blank or basic shower disk I use:
– 1 cup of Bi-Carb Soda (baking soda)
– 1/2 cup Citric Acid
– 1/2 cup Arrowroot
– 2 to 3 tablespoons water
– various essential oils.
Pin ingredients list.
How to make:
1. Sift all the dry ingredients into a small bowl.
2. Mix in water, one tablespoon at a time. The mixture needs to bind together, but still remain fairly dry. After the initial spoon of water, I tend to use my hands to stir the mixture. The mix is ready when you can squeeze a ball of mixture in your hand and it keeps its shape. If you add too much water the mixture will fizz and rise while drying.
3. Spoon mixture into silicon cups, muffin tins or ice cube trays. I used individual silicon muffin cases for mine. Fill about one third of the case and press down firmly.
4. I chose to bake mine in a slow oven for about 15 minutes… or until dry. Alternatively, you can leave them to dry naturally over a few days. Store in an air tight container.
How To Use:
To use the steamers, take one or two dried discs and add the essential oils of choice (see suggestions below) and then place on the floor of the shower, away from the water. I usually stand between the disc and the water, so that the steam mostly hits the steamer, not the water. With the main ingredient being Bi-Carb Soda, they fizzle up and disappear pretty quickly once water hits them.
Here are my suggestions for aromatherapy essential oils you can use on your steamer/disc, but there are also many other options available.
Breathe Easy blend:
3 drops Peppermint + 3 drops Eucalyptus + 4 drops Lavender
(good for blocked nose and congestion)
Relax blend:
3 drops Lavender + 3 drops Ylang Ylang + 4 drops Geranium
(I like this for an evening shower before bed)
Stress Relief blend:
4 drops Bergamot + 3 drops Geranium + 3 drops Ylang Ylang
Energising blend:
3 drops Bergamot + 4 drops lemon + 3 drops Peppermint
Scented shower steamers make for a great homemade gift, packaged up in an air tight jar.
I’ve made some pretty tags that can be downloaded and printed.

Either cut out and glue to jar or pop a little eyelet in the top of the tag and hang with ribbon from your jar lid.
PIN for later.
I hope you remember to have some ‘ME’ time and pamper ‘YOU’ regularly.
Happy crafting!

Hi KerryAnne,
Could one not add the essential oil while mixing the dry ingredients?

Hi Gerolene, if you are not going to bake the discs then yes, definitely can add the oils to the mix before moulding. Best not to add them to the mix if baking as you don’t want them to evaporate. Also, I like that I have a bottle filled with blanks that I can use with any oils. I might want something relaxing before bed, but prefer a more energising blend for early morning. Hope this helps 🙂
