Hello creative friends,
I’m delighted that the Retro Shabby kit has spoken to the hearts of so many crafters.
Given the state of our world in 2020, I suspect that it’s been a nice escape for many this month…. especially those who are old enough to remember this era.
Like many of you, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the step back in time with this kit and will continue to use it often. I’ve got some cards almost finished and I’ll continue to work on my vintage doll journal as time allows…. but I’ve had to move on to my next Handmade Club kit.
I wanted to share with you one last item that I made this week….. it’s a new retro shabby banner for my craft room.
This banner was made using elements from: the paper pack, the vintage ladies files and the embellishment files.
I have resized the graphics to suit the size of the banner and I also created five different shaped pennants from the vintage wallpaper papers in the kit.
As always, I’m happy to share the print file I made for this project with the members of the Handmade Club.
If you are a member, you’ll find a new PDF file added in the Handmade Club July folder.
All you have to do is download, print and cut out.
Making the Retro Shabby Banner
There are five pages in the PDF file and it’s available in both A4 and letter size (USA).
I printed mine on 250 gms matte photo paper (card stock thickness).
There are five individually decorated pennants… each has a layered and dimensional look.
This was achieved by layering and overlapping several elements on the one pennant and by also using foam tape to raise the top child graphic higher.
Tip: to fussy cut the little girls, I used both a craft knife and a small pointy nosed pair of scissors. You’ll notice that I have used the knife to remove the segments of white that was between the arms and the clothing. This helps create dimension by casting shadows and allowing you to see through to the layer below.
I kept to a soft and shabby, pastel colour palette by using mainly soft blues and pinks. You may add in other elements too like lace, buttons, ric-rac and ribbon bows.
If you prefer a brighter colour palette, you can substitute for some of the brighter items in the kit. This project might even be an inspiration for you to create your own banner.
Once I had created the five pennants, I pegged them to a length of natural string with mini wood pegs. When completed, the banner measures approximately 20 cm high x 120 cm wide (8” x 48”)
If you like the look of the pennants, but don’t wish to hang a banner, you could use them individually as the front of greeting cards/tags or a loaded pocket.
There truly are so many possibilities with this kit!
