The cottage style says ‘welcome, make yourself at home’.
It’s comfy and cosy and definitely takes a more relaxed approach to decorating.
It’s a style that embraces imperfections, easily mixes vintage finds with homemade wares… and mismatched furnishings only add to the charm.
It’s easy to get a cottage look with just a few simple soft furnishings…
Think mixed scatter cushions and throw rugs…
And what about pretty tea towels and kitchen linens!
Tea towels are such a cheap and easy way to add a splash of pretty, pastel colour to your kitchen… what’s more, you can change them over regularly and create a completely different look each time.
Plus, I have a few tips to help you ‘Get The Look’.
Did you know that you can add simple visual interest to a tea towel using fabric paints?
And what’s more… you can easily turn your acrylic paints into fabric paints.
When you mix a small amount of a textile/fabric painting medium with acrylic paint it produces a washable, permanent paint for fabrics.
It improves penetration and bonds to the fabric while helping to prevent, cracking, peeling, and fading. I like the Decoart Americana Fabric Painting Medium, which is suitable for clothing and home décor fabric projects.
This technique allows you to turn any colour of acrylic paint into a fabric paint.
Now that you have a fabric paint mixed up, you can use stencils and a stencil brush to paint simple geometric designs onto plain fabric tea towels.
Another Tip: Don’t throw out your old x-rays. I use a sharp craft knife (or scalpel) to cut my own designs from pieces of x-ray. These stencils are so strong that they can be used over and over again.
For something with a little more colour, you might like to check out my tutorial for making my Shabby Houses on Ric Rac Street applique tea towel.
These are perfect for tying a colour scheme together or for adding a bit of whimsy and interest to an otherwise basic kitchen.
How do you add cottage charm to your home?
I’d love to hear, so please let me know in the comments.
Happy crafting

What a brilliant idea to use old xrays for stencils. I really like the cottages on ric-rac street and the stacked tea cups. Think I should make some ptretty new tea towels.
