When one of my readers, Valerie, asked if I’d consider creating something for storing fabric swatches, I knew there would be many crafters and sewers who would also find this a useful project.
I had included a fabric swatch sheet in a creativity planner a few years ago, but never made individual tags.
When I sat down to design these, I was thinking about all of the times I’ve raced off to the fabric or craft shop with snippets of fabric stuffed in a zip lock bag, ready to match up with whatever craft item I needed….. does anyone else ever do that too?
Fabric Swatch Tags
These tags measure 6 cm wide x 12 cm high, so are the perfect size to throw into your handbag for a trip to the store.
I’ve included space to document all the necessary details about each fabric, including length of fabric…..
This was a biggie for me, because too often I’ve had to empty a whole box of fabrics, just to find out if I have enough of a particular fabric to use for a project. Hopefully those days are now over!
Download this Printable
I’ve created a one page PDF containing 6 tags.
I did make a small alteration to the final printable and that was to lighten the words on the fabric swatch area, so they would not show through on lighter fabrics.

I printed my fabric swatch tags on cardstock (250 gms matte photo paper) and cut them out with a sharp knife and metal ruler. You could also use a paper trimmer.
As I quite like rounded corners, I also used my corner punch… but that is completely optional.
There’s a handy ‘+’ marked where you need to use your hole punch too.
If you store your fabric swatch tags on a binder ring, you can then remove them if necessary.
I know if I wanted to match fabrics at the store, I’d take just the swatches that I need on a ring.
Having small samples of all of your fabrics would be quite useful for working out which fabrics you’d like to use for a new project and would also alleviate the need to get out all of your fabrics…. so I’m seeing lots of positives for this project.
If you store your fabrics in several places (because most of us have way tooooooo much fabric), I’m thinking you could also write on the back of the tags where each fabric is stored.
I hope that you too find this a fun and useful project!

Much prettier than the notebook I use . I staple the swatch in the book and scribble the details. This will also be great for my hat collection Picture of hat on tag , details and which hat box it’s in.
I love that my readers are thinking of other uses for the tags… that’s brilliant!!
Hugs,
Kerryanne
Thank you Valerie for the great idea and KerryAnne for making it come to fruition. It was just what I needed to solve my problem of not knowing for sure what I had at home. I added a little more information on the back of tag. Such as my thread, buttons and trims/laces to use with the fabrics that I swatched. They are something I use all the time so for me this made it cost effect to know these things. So another Thank you to you both for a great money saving idea…I won’t be buying things I already have. : ) Have a wonderful and calm upcoming weekend KerryAnne. Smiles from acrossed the Pond!
I’m thrilled that you are able to use them JoeyAnn. I hear what you are saying…. gosh, how often have I re-purchased items because I didn’t know I already have them in my craft room.
Stay safe my friend. Hugs x

What a great idea. AND you solved the problem of where it is stashed–my first question–“Where did I put it?” I’m sure this will be a popular post!
I know Kathy…. who knew so many of us were needing these tags. Hopefully now we will all be super organised with our fabric stashes.
Hugs,
Kerryanne
This is a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you Kerryanne.
Thank you Kerryanne, for this and all your great ideas. With a bit of time on my hands lately, I have been reorganizing and now I can catalogue my efforts. I will also be using some of the other viewers ideas. Keep these fun ideas coming. J.D.K. from the USA
Thank you for creating these lovely tags for my fabric stash! I also have too much fabric to remember details when I am out and about (prior to pandemic of course) shopping and see ribbons or buttons and wonder if they would work with my fabric. I printed some tags on pastel colored card stock and they turned out so cute! I appreciate you spreading your sunshine all the way to the United States.
Thanks so much for the great idea.
I just love it….Thanks for adding. I’m already using it!
