Today I’m sharing something a little more personal.
I’m joining with a fun and supportive group of ‘over 50’ bloggers to bring you a collection of posts for ‘fabulous’ women. Make sure you check out the other posts at the bottom of the page.
Even though I’ve never had a hang up about age or milestone birthdays, I definitely felt a personal change after I turned fifty in 2014.
The fabulous fifties brought with them a new stronger and happier me. I had finally reached a point in life where I no longer felt the need to please others, follow trends, or be pigeon holed by society’s opinions… I was happy simply being the real ME.
Now I’m not saying it is all sunshine and roses after you turn 50…. because it’s not.
Just when you are feeling fabulous and loving life, there are days when menopause slaps you in the face with a big old dose of crazy hormones, hot flashes, insomnia… and what seems like a dozen other irritating symptoms.
I think most of us silently grin and bear it, while seeking all kinds of remedies to help alleviate those pesky symptoms.
So, today I’m sharing something simple that I find helps with those hot flashes…

Peppermint Cooling Spray
Seriously, this spray is so super easy and has just 2 ingredients; water and peppermint oil.
Peppermint oil works so well at cooling because it contains menthol, which actually tricks the brain into thinking it is experiencing cold?
What you need:
Glass spray bottle – 2 oz or larger,
10 drops of peppermint essential oil.
How to make peppermint cooling spray:
Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil per 2 ounces (60 mls) of distilled water. Store in a glass spray bottle and shake well before each use.
Note: Peppermint essential oil is quite potent, so maybe start with just 5 drops and give it a try before adding more.
I personally test any essential oil mixtures on my arm before using on other parts of my body.
Directions for use: spray on the back of your neck, face, whole body or swim in it. Whatever cools you down!!
Tip – Peppermint cooling spray is not just for ‘hot and fabulous’ women. Pop a bottle in your handbag for all your families outdoor summer activities. They will love it too!
[PIN for later]
It’s not much, but I hope this cooling tip will bring you some relief should you be fifty and fabulous…. and hormonally challenged!!

Happy crafting my friends,

What a great tip! Thankfully I haven’t had a bad time with personal summers but I do know several women who do and I’ll be sharing your article with them. At 51 I’m more confident than I’ve ever been, and like you I don’t worry so much about what others think. It’s very liberating. I wish there was a way to help the younger ladies find their confidence now.

You know Toni, I think this confidence and liberation comes from actually living and experiencing life, so maybe we have to live first to become so wise 🙂
Hopefully your personal summers won’t be in the tropics!!

Great one to pin Maria…. never know when you might need it. I like making homemade things too. At least you know what ingredients are in it then. 🙂

I have a peppermint spray that I use on hot & tired feet so know how wonderful this will feel.
Thank you for sharing.

Peppermint is great for cooling everything Toni, but sometimes we overlook really obvious solutions. I hope the cooling spray recipe is useful for a few ‘hot’ ladies out there 😉

I am beyond that time in life but will share for sure. You made a comment how you gained more confidence after turning 50 and that is something I found as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Thank You Thank YouKerryanne. I’ll be making this by the dozen – one bottle for each room in the house, a small bottle for my purse, and one for my car. Seriously!

Hi Kerryanne,
I also love essential oils and have written several posts about them. Peppermint cooling spray is not one of them. Great idea. Mostly I have had problems at night. You know, you wake up hot, then you’re cold. Ah menopause. Do you think if men had to go through this is would be easier? Great post. I’m going to make this one, and I already have the oil. 🙂

Kerryanne, I enjoyed your post so much (as well as others here) that it inspired me to write my own… and I should have asked ‘before – oops’ but I included your post/link. But I also loved the peppermint oil idea – will definitely have to try it and try not to lick myself. HEE HEE http://www.lauramcdaniel.com

Glad you liked my cooling spray Laura and I certainly don’t mind you sharing it on your blog 🙂

Kerryanne I started menopause about ten years ago and those pesky hot flashes still persist. Alright, maybe not as intense but when will I be done with them already? This is a great remedy for us “Fifty and Fab” ladies. I am glad to see that I am in excellent company.

What a super idea with the mint. I am 51 and have had the menopause and hotflashes since I was 47, and this idea I have never seen, so I’m absolutely gonna try it. Thank You so much for the tip.
