It’s been a busy and productive few days in my craft room [insert happy face here].
Following on from my Valentine mug rug project yesterday, I used the same pretty fabrics to make a shabby faux patchwork heart.
I first shared the shabby hearts project last year… and it has proved very popular.
Shown below as a gift tag, the hearts could be used in many different ways eg, drink coasters, in your home décor, as an essential oil or candle mat.
Instructions:
1. I cut a base piece of fabric 24 cm x 26 cm and randomly attached pieces of fabric to it with fusible webbing. All the fabric pieces were cut freehand… and nothing is perfect.
2. When all of the base fabric was covered, I chose a fancy stitch on my sewing machine and edged all the little fabric pieces. It looks kind of like patchwork… if patchwork was imperfect.
[image below shows different fabric example]
3. When the fabric top was all stitched and the loose threads removed, I traced 4 heart shapes onto the back of the fabric. I usually make a template out of cardboard to trace around. Next I cut out the heart shapes.
4. I added some embellishments like free motions stitching, hand stitching and stamped words.
I cut more hearts out of wool felt and a pretty backing fabric. The felt heart was sandwiched between the top and back layers. I secured the 3 layers together with a couple of long sewing pins and then set about free motion stitching the outer perimeter of the hearts.
No two hearts will be the same and all will have that perfectly imperfect handmade look.
I received an enquiry about the stamped fabric yesterday. I used an alphabet stamp set to individually stamp the letters on ripped fabric… that’s why the letters are not perfectly placed. I have a tutorial for stamped ribbon HERE.
[pin for later]
Valentine hugs
