Advent calendars have long been used to count down the days until Christmas.
Starting on December 1st, the air of anticipation as each day is marked off delights young and old alike.
You can add a touch of Victorian elegance to your Christmas decorating this year with this vintage themed advent calendar.
I love the beautiful artwork on Victorian postcards, so when I designed this advent box I raided my treasure trove of Victorian images to design 26 graphics for use on the advent drawers.
The 25 drawer box is made by Kaisercraft. Here in Australia you can purchase it from Spotlight or scrapbooking stores. For my overseas friends you can get it on Amazon
I’ve given very detailed step-by-step instructions with images, so I’ve made it into an E-pattern and it is available to download HERE.
We had many different sorts of Advent calendars over the years, but my fondest memory is the calendar we had when my girls were young. It was handmade from green felt and my girls helped me decorate each of the 24 pockets.
My eldest daughter Jessica was around 5 years old at the time and was quite taken with the element of surprise the pocket provided each morning.
A few days in to the advent I suspect that anticipation got the better of her…. she stole a quiet moment to drag a chair up to the advent calendar and emptied every pocket of its treasure.
I found her sitting on the floor surrounded with lolly (candy) wrappers, a mouth full of chocolate and wearing a very satisfied look. Needless to say, this mummy learned a valuable lesson and from that day on our advent calendars were filled each day.
Even now at 21, I suspect she would sneak a peek in every pocket to see what surprises awaited here.
We are never too old to enjoy the anticipation and countdown to Christmas…
And I love being able to pop treats inside our advent box for my family.
Now that my children are adults, advent surprises are a mixture of things; a family tradition, making or doing something for others, a favourite Christmas movie to watch… and yes, the occasional sweet treat too!
Happy festive crafting,
Hugs

A beautiful Advent Kerryanne – TFS.
My first advent was a card sent from cousins in Sweden with little doors to open each day and a pretty Christmas image behind. I was probably about 6yrs old. I’ve had an advent, in one form or another every year since.
