A cottage wreath

On the path that meanders down to my studio is a row of mixed Lavender bushes.

 

I’ve always planted two varieties of Lavenders so that I have blooms for all seasons. . . with some bushes flowering in Spring and the others in Autumn.

With the changing of the seasons and the soon to be wintery days, my lavender bushes are no longer baring any flowers. For this brief period every winter I am without the scent of lavender wafting into my creative space, so it is the perfect time to prune and shape the bushes ready for spring.

 

After a little garden tidy up this morning the pile of pruned greenery looked so pretty with its delicate greyish green stems.

It seemed such a shame to throw it in the gardening bin. . . so I gathered my clippings to make a loosely bound cottage wreath for my kitchen.

All that was needed was some wire, pliers, ribbon. . . and a few spare minutes for this quick DIY wreath project.

 

 

I twisted a 70 cm piece of thicker wire into a ring shape, which formed a ring with a diameter of 20 cm.

Using a smaller gauged florist wire cut into small pieces, I attached  the sprigs of lavender greenery around the wire ring, overlapping the base of each spring as I progressed around the perimeter.

 

 

I wasn’t too fussy with the length of the stems, which I think gives the wreath a less formal look.

When the wreath was completed I looped a piece of white ribbon from the top, so I could hang the cottage wreath over my kitchen blackboard.

It certainly adds a lovely welcoming touch to the kitchen at a time of the year when there are few flowers blooming in the garden.
