Hi creative friends,
Each month in the Craft Room, we love shining a spotlight on one of our talented members and celebrating the creativity they bring to our community.
This month, I’m delighted to introduce you to Dawn Hansen from Williamsburg, Virginia.

If you’ve spent any time admiring Dawn’s projects in the Craft Room, you’ve probably noticed her wonderful blend of whimsy, imagination, and craftsmanship.
Let’s get to know her a little better!
Tell us a little about yourself
My name is Dawn Hansen, and I live in the charming and very historic city of Williamsburg, Virginia.

What initially inspired you to start crafting?
Dawn’s creative journey began almost as soon as she can remember.
“Even as a very small child, I was always making things to enhance my play experience. Thankfully my parents and grandparents saw very early on that I loved to create, so I always had ample raw materials to experiment with.”
Long before recycling became fashionable, Dawn was already transforming everyday treasures into magical creations.
She fondly remembers keeping a special box filled with discarded items that became some of her most treasured playthings simply because she had made them herself.
How would you describe your craft style?
Whimsical!
A simple answer that perfectly captures the charm and personality found throughout Dawn’s creative work.

Is there a project that holds a special place in your heart?
Of all the projects Dawn has created over the years, one stands out above the rest.
She transformed an old television cabinet into a miniature cottage for her little mouse friend, Lydia. This enchanting project combined many of the skills she had learned over the years, while also challenging her to learn new techniques to create all the tiny details.
“It’s a magical place where I am constantly making little adjustments and adding new tiny treasures to bring her world to life. It just makes my heart sing every time I open the doors and peek into her world, wishing I could shrink myself and join her for tea one day.”
What a delightful glimpse into Dawn’s imaginative spirit!

What craft or technique do you enjoy most?
Choosing just one favourite craft was no easy task, but Dawn ultimately chose sewing.
Her love of sewing began at an early age while watching her grandmother, who was a seamstress. Inspired by those precious moments, Dawn received her first sewing machine at just five years old.
“I fell in love and I have never stopped.”
For Dawn, sewing feels as natural as breathing. She loves the ability to transform a simple piece of fabric into something beautiful and meaningful.

How has the Craft Room influenced your creative journey?
Although Dawn has always loved paper crafting, joining the Craft Room encouraged her to explore it in new ways.
She was intrigued by the similarities between paper and fabric and wondered whether the design skills she had developed through sewing could translate into paper crafting projects.
“Being here with so many talented ladies and seeing all the lovely things everyone is making has been such an inspiration. I am learning so much and loving every minute of it!”
Have any artists influenced your style?
One artist who made a lasting impression on Dawn is Mary Engelbreit.
While Dawn prefers softer colour palettes than Mary is known for, she has always admired her playful and whimsical approach to art.
Over time, Dawn has developed a style that she describes as sitting comfortably somewhere between whimsy and shabby… a perfect description of the beautiful projects she shares with us.

What does your creative process look like?
For Dawn, every project begins with an idea.
Sometimes it’s sparked entirely from her imagination, while other times inspiration comes from something she has seen that captures her attention.
From there, she selects a colour palette and begins gathering supplies from her extensive craft collection.
“Then, oddly, it just somehow magically all comes together.”
Most of her creative process feels intuitive and effortless, but she especially enjoys those projects that present a challenge and require problem-solving along the way.

What are your can’t-live-without craft essentials?
At the top of Dawn’s list is her beloved sewing machine.
Beyond that, she keeps things surprisingly simple:
- Fabric
- Paper
- Good scissors
- Glue
Of course, she also loves all the finishing touches… sparkly embellishments, ribbons, trims, and beautiful little treasures that add personality to a project.
Although she owns several crafting machines, Dawn often prefers creating things by hand whenever possible.
What are you currently working on?
Dawn recently completed her latest paper crafting project, which she shared with the Craft Room community.
At the moment, she’s enjoying that wonderful stage between projects… dreaming up what to make next.
In the meantime, she has a few sewing projects patiently waiting for attention until the next burst of paper-crafting inspiration arrives.

Thank You, Dawn!
Thank you, Dawn, for sharing your creative story with us and for bringing so much imagination, warmth, and inspiration to our Craft Room community.
Your whimsical style, love of making, and willingness to continually learn and explore new creative avenues are a joy to see.
We can’t wait to see what you create next!
