DIY Scrappy Hearts

Hello ‘shabbilicious’ friends,

I apologize that I’ve been ‘MIA’ the past few days…

Life just got a tad busy!!

Shabby Art Boutique - shabby fabric hearts

I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours in my craftroom over the weekend… there was a huge ‘To Do’ list to contend with, but when I had a break, I spent some time just ‘pottering’.

Lately I’ve really enjoyed these unstructured crafting moments.

I delved into my scraps bag to use up some of the left over fabric pieces from my Tilda ‘Happiness is Homemade’ collection.

1. I cut a base piece of fabric 24 cm x 26 cm and randomly attached pieces of fabric to it with fusible webbing. All the fabric pieces were cut freehand… and nothing is perfect.

2. When all of the base fabric was covered, I chose a fancy stitch on my sewing machine and edged all the little fabric pieces. It looks kind of like patchwork… if patchwork was imperfect.

3. When the fabric top was all stitched and the loose threads removed, I traced 4 heart shapes onto the back of the fabric. Next I cut out the heart shapes.

4. I added some embellishments like free motions stitching, hand stitching and stamped words.

I cut more hearts out of wool felt and a pretty backing fabric. The felt heart was sandwiched between the top and back layers. I secured the 3 layers together with a couple of long sewing pins and then set about free motion stitching the outer perimeter of the hearts.

All of the hearts are quite different… but still have that handmade, unstructured look. I think they are so cute and perfectly imperfect!

I used one as a gift tag and another is hanging from my shelf unit in my craft room. Imagine them strung as a shabilicious garland!!

Not a bad project, seeing it was made from a few off-cuts and left over bits and pieces.

I think I’ll make it my mission to make at least one thing each week using something from my craft cupboard.

That way I can clear some room to buy new crafting supplies!

Happy crafting

These are so lovely Kerryanne, I would love to make some to add to Christmas presents. Especially for my “stitchy” friends I too would like to know how to get the lettering onto lineny looking fabric. Is it something simple like stamping letters or print from printer and computer. Shirley
