Welcome 2009…. I’m happy already.
Laying around in bed all day means I get to actually read the newspaper from cover to cover and yesterdays Herald Sun had an article by Kylie Hansen that thrilled me. Here’s an excerpt…
The domestic Goddess is back in town
She sews, cooks, knits, gardens – and even raises chooks. The housewife is back with younger women embracing domestic crafts in droves according to new figures.
I read this article with interest. I strongly believe that growing up in the 60’s & 70’s, I had a better childhood than my children are experiencing. I know that there are many wonderful inventions, medical discoveries etc that we all benefit from now but I’m thinking more about the joys of growing up in a time when life was simple. We had the essential 1/4 acre block with a large back yard where we played cricket, footy and swam in our backyard swimming pool. There was fruit trees, a vegie garden and a large old fashioned ‘Hills Hoist’ clothes line. What aussie kid of that era hasn’t swung around on the hills hoist until they are dizzy? My mum would knit, sew, bake, cooked everything from scratch and take us to the market with her. My grandparents lived in the country where the eggs came straight from the backyard chooks and we drank milk straight from the milking shed – and we didn’t die!!
Here’s some more from the article….
What’s in:
- baby slings and compact strollers
- knitting, craft and fruit preserving
- growing vegies in the backyard
- cooking classes/home baking
- chickens in the backyard and home grown eggs
- clothes and toy swaps among friends
- newspapers, books and pay TV
-
natural cleaning products like vinegar and bicarb.
…The modern housewife is likely to hop online for a domestic fix. You just have to look at the thousands upon thousands of mummy blogs to get a sense of this phenomenon. Many of the blogs have a craft focus, and such a dedicated following that whole communities of women are out there swapping sewing patterns, craft ideas and recipes.
Isn’t it wonderful to see the return to domestic life? Today’s modern women are accomplished but see nothing wrong with devoting that intelligence to home life. Even better is seeing these women turning their domestic skills into thriving small online businesses.
What a wonderful blogging community we belong to – I’m ever so grateful to be a part of it.
Here’s a couple of pics of my junior domestic goddess ‘in-training’, Miss Aimee, this afternoon.
She loves to cook and made these beautiful banana and maple syrup pancakes for our afternoon tea.
While domesticity is not for everyone, it makes my heart sing that there is an upward turn in modern women embracing their inner housewife and transforming the image into a new look domestic diva…..hooray, now I can wear my apron with pride.
And in keeping with this theme, I’m back in work mode and am currently designing a range of new hand made card designs for those domestic goddesses that would like to make their own handmade cards for all occasions.
Hugs,
Kerryanne

Oh I am finally in the ‘IN’ crowd, yahoo!!! It is nice to know that we really are not weird or old fashioned, we are the next best thing! We have chooks in our back yard and guinea pigs and outside forts to play on and we are the subject of great interest from the children of surrounding families who don’t even have grass at their place!! My children like to create and cook and jump on the trampoline and want to be just like me when they grow up. I hope that means they want to be ready at a moments notice to whip up a batch of cupcakes for school, cook dinner from scratch not freezer or make a costume or help their children make Christmas cards even though they never get time to send some themelves. If we the ‘in’ crowd can pass that on to our children, our work here is done! Sorry for the long comment but it was a great post and this is the closest we come to chatting!!

Great post Kerryanne! I feel the same way and for much of my life longed to grow up as you did. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s a lot of those things were lost…but hopefully when I have children one day, I can provide a life that will reminisce those times just as you are doing with your daughters!

What a fabulous post Kerryanne!
I was born in the mid 70’s & I have to agree with you on how things have changed over this time, but it’s great to see things comming full circle.
I grew up on a farm, getting dirty was just what you did, eating Sunday roast lunch was ‘normal’ & having a mum that would whip you up an outfit to wear to a friends birthday party was pretty cool.
Thanks for letting my mind wonder to a place it hadn’t been for while.
Women are wonderful creatures & it’s great to see us getting the the recognition we deserve even if it doesn’t come with huge paying salary (just big wet sloppy kisses from adoring children!)

Everything comes back in style they say…I would LOVE a simpler lifestyle where kids actually go outside to play. I was telling my kids today what it was like outside LOL. They didn’t buy into it though!
Your little Aimee looks very cute in training 🙂

Hey Kerryanne! Yep, as a child of the 70’s we spent more time outside than in, helped Mum in the vege garden, collected eggs with the next door neighbour, Mum made most of our clothes and taught us (my brother too!) to cook from scratch. We may not have had all the mod cons, but I wouldn’t swap, so I have fantastic childhood memories!! And for years, I’ve always been the youngest member of any craft group I’ve been involved in, so I’m SOOOOO glad that’s changing – we just got a head start! Does that mean we’re trend setters! Tee! Hee! Hee! Thanks for sharing – can’t wait to see your domestic goddess goodies! Bear Hugs! KRIS
