How to Paint Shabby Fall Owls

Personally, I feel owls fit in perfectly with fall and winter decor.

Although I have mine out all year round, I do tend to make a feature of them more in the cooler months. This year they are sitting in the hydrangea corner in a show of soft mauves, greys and greens.

Today I’m sharing a tutorial for painting this pair of sweet owls, so if you dabble in decorative painting, make sure you get the free downloadable e-Pattern at the end of this post.

I have such an affinity with owls…

As you would have noticed, they appear quite often in my art, crafting and in and around my studio space…. that’s because I’m quite enamoured by their majestic presence.

I was lucky enough in our last home to have a pair of owls living in the tree outside my bedroom window. They would come and go for weeks at a time and I loved listening to their nightly chatter of hoots and squeals. Sometimes I’d be staring out my second story window at them and they appeared to be staring right back at me…. neither of us moving…. both just watching!

These owls are made of wood. Here in Australia we use MDF, but I know that is not available everywhere. You can use any wood, as long as it is at least 16 – 18 mm thick, so that your owls can stand up.

The PDF E-pattern comes with full sized patterns and you will require a scroll saw to cut out these shapes.

The single owl measures 12 cm high x 8 cm wide and the owl sitting on the pumpkin measures 17.5 cm high x 11 cm wide.

Full photographic step-by-step instructions, a materials list and patterns are provided in this free E-pattern.
