Faux Patchwork Christmas Coasters

Hello friends,

Today’s project is another in my collection of faux patchwork pieces.

These projects have proven really popular and I get why… they are super easy, use basic sewing skills and are a fabulous way to use up fabric scraps.

You told me you loved my pumpkin coasters for fall, so today I have a quick remake for Christmas pudding coasters…. aren’t they cute!!

Easy Faux Patchwork Christmas Pudding Coasters Tutorial by Shabby Art Boutique

(Please wash all fabrics before use)

An assortment of fabric scraps – I used 2 different designs per coaster.

Visoflex (or any kind of iron on applique paper),

Small piece of calico for applique,

Cream wool felt for backing,

Template – see below,

Sewing machine and usual sewing supplies.

Note: Applique papers have lots of different names. Visoflex is the one I have readily available where I live, but yours may be called something entirely different. What you need is an iron on paper sold for patchwork and applique.

Pudding Template: I made my puddings 10cm wide, but you can vary the size to suit your needs. Simply right click the image below and save to your own computer. Insert the image into a word document and adjust size to suit.

1. Trace both of the pattern pieces onto the paper side of your Visoflex. Set your iron to NO steam and iron the applique cut-outs onto the back of your fabric.

2. Cut out shapes. Peel off the backing papers and arrange fabric pieces on your calico fabric.

3. Pin the backing wool felt behind the front panel and using a free motion stich technique, stitch around the perimeter and the custard piece twice. When finished, secure cotton ends and then using sharp scissors, cut away the excess fabric.

4. To finish mine off, I added a green bow, but you could make an applique holly leaves and French knot berries with embroidery cotton.

Tip: a larger pudding could be used as a trivet or placemat.
